Cradle to Cradle
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
In contrast to "cradle to grave" (make-use-dispose), it advocates considering the infinite recycling of materials from the very beginning of product design. All materials are either biological nutrients (returning to nature) or technical nutrients (returning to industrial cycles).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Eliminate waste: waste is a product of design errors. Perfect design, like nature, has no waste, only nutrients.
Anchor fast decisions
In contrast to "cradle to grave" (linear disposal), C2C advocates that materials are destined for circulation from the start of design: biological nutrients can safely return to nature, technical nutrients can return to industrial cycles without loss, and waste equals nutrients. Waste is a failure of design; good design should be waste-free like nature.
