Whole Product
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A product is not only its core function (expected product) but also peripheral auxiliary layers (augmented product), such as after-sales service, community, and emotional value. Competition often occurs in the augmented layer, not the core layer.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Differentiation breakthrough. If your core function (e.g., making phone calls) is the same as competitors', you must find the battlefield in the augmented layer (e.g., status symbol, dedicated customer service).
Anchor fast decisions
Kotler divides products into three layers: core, actual, and augmented. Customers buy the whole package that solves their problem, not the bare product. It expands the boundary of 'product'.
