Dead Time
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The 'pure delay' time between issuing a command and the system beginning to respond. During dead time, no matter how frantically you operate, the system gives no feedback.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Restraint in operation. Like adjusting water temperature in the shower: after turning the knob, you must wait a few seconds for the water to heat up. If you keep turning the knob frantically because you see no reaction during dead time, you'll end up scalded. During the lag period before a policy takes effect, keep your hands steady and don't fiddle.
Anchor fast decisions
Pure delay between command and system response, during which operations are ineffective; additional operations during dead time cause overshoot.
