The spleen (Earth) normally controls the kidney (Water), but physiologically, Earth can restrain Water to prevent flooding, and Water can moisten Earth to prevent dryness.

They mutually restrain and support each other, maintaining fluid metabolism balance. Once Earth is deficient and cannot control Water, Water-dampness overflows as edema.
