We only see the winners (survivors), but not the thousands of losers in the graveyard. History is written by the winners, and data is provided by the survivors.

Reduce cognitive load
Look for the bodies. When you want to imitate Musk or Jobs, don't just look at what they did. Go to the graveyard and see how many people did the same things (dropping out, taking risks) but died miserably? Studying the commonalities of failures is more valuable than studying the successes.
Anchor fast decisions
The reverse of survivorship bias refers to the bias caused by only seeing failures and ignoring survivors, or to actively studying failure samples to correct survivorship bias. It is related to failure studies and antifragility.
