OMTM
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
One Metric That Matters. In a specific stage of a startup or project, the entire company focuses on only one metric that determines success or failure (e.g., Airbnb's early "nights booked"), and all other metrics are distractions.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Focus convergence: prevents the team from being overwhelmed by dozens of dashboard charts. At any moment, there should be only one number that everyone looks at every morning.
Anchor fast decisions
Too many metrics dilute attention and induce local optimization (sacrificing the main line for secondary metrics). OMTM advocates focusing on only one "life-or-death" metric at a given stage, converging the entire organization's attention to the same focus, while other metrics are downgraded to monitoring items. As the stage progresses, the focus metric can be switched.
