STAR Method
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A standard template for structuring a description of an experience. Situation (what is the background), Task (what is the goal), Action (what exactly did you do), Result (what quantifiable outcome was achieved).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Experience granularity: Whether writing a resume or reporting work, using the STAR method prevents a running account and ensures that your 'abilities' are supported by specific 'facts'.
Anchor fast decisions
Use the four sections of 'Situation-Task-Action-Result' to turn an experience into a story with causality and evidence: S/T set the background and goal, A highlights 'my' specific behaviors (rather than vague team actions), and R uses quantifiable results to prove capability. It anchors abstract abilities to facts, preventing running accounts and evaluative empty talk.
