Attractor
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The destination of the system's state evolution trend. Regardless of the initial state, the system will eventually fall into and stay in a specific set of states or trajectories (e.g., a pendulum stops at the lowest point).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Change the system's potential energy. Trying to forcibly change the status quo (pushing the pendulum) is usually futile because the system returns to the attractor. To change the status quo, you must change the system's parameters and create a new attractor (new habits, new culture).
Anchor fast decisions
An attractor is a set of states toward which a dynamical system evolves over the long term, such as fixed points, limit cycles, and strange attractors.
