CORE DEFINITION

The total amount of information the brain can process in a given time (including attention, decision-making, and willpower). Poverty or scarcity can occupy a large amount of bandwidth, leading to a temporary decline in IQ.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

Manage mental resources. It reminds us that willpower is limited. Do not waste bandwidth on trivial matters (such as what to wear or eat), but reserve precious bandwidth for the most important decisions and deep work.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Attention, willpower, and working memory share a limited 'bandwidth pool'; scarcity (financial/time pressure) continuously occupies this pool, crowding out other cognitive functions, causing a temporary IQ drop akin to a 'bandwidth tax'.
