Cone of Experience
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A pyramid model where the base is 'direct, purposeful experience' (learning by doing, 90% retention) and the apex is 'verbal symbols' (reading/listening, 10% retention). The closer to the base, the more concrete and profound the learning experience.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Design efficient learning paths. If you truly want to master a skill, do not stay only at the apex of 'reading' and 'listening'. Even simulation or designing a project is far more efficient than mere input.
Anchor fast decisions
The Cone of Experience, proposed by Edgar Dale, arranges learning experiences in a pyramid according to 'concrete-abstract': the base is direct experience (learning by doing), the apex is verbal symbols (listening and reading). The more concrete, the better memory and transfer. The mechanism is that concrete experiences activate more sensory and contextual cues, forming stronger neural representations; pure symbolic input lacks contextual anchors and is quickly forgotten. It guides using activities closer to the base to enhance learning effectiveness.
