Tactical Empathy
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Not just feeling the other person's emotions, but accurately describing their feelings in words ("It seems you're angry about this price"), making them feel understood, lowering defenses, and willing to correct or confirm your description by revealing information.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Intelligence gathering. Don't ask "why," which sounds accusatory. Use "labeling" to name the other's emotions and induce them to reveal deeper motives.
Anchor fast decisions
Proposed by FBI negotiator Chris Voss. Accurately "labeling" the other's emotions ("It seems you feel...") makes them feel understood, lowers defenses, and triggers oxytocin-like trust, making them more willing to reveal true needs. It treats empathy as a tactical tool for intelligence and influence, not weakness.
