Rate-Determining Step
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
In a multi-step chemical reaction, the step with the slowest reaction rate determines the overall rate of the entire reaction.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Find the true bottleneck. Similar to the 'barrel effect', but with a stronger emphasis on dynamic processes. No matter how fast your other departments (marketing, sales) run, if R&D (the rate-determining step) is stuck, the entire company's output speed is locked to the speed of R&D. Optimizing non-rate-determining steps is a waste of resources.
Anchor fast decisions
In a multi-step reaction, the slowest step determines the overall rate. Before optimizing it, accelerating other steps does not benefit the overall rate. The mechanism is 'the slowest link = global bottleneck', similar to the barrel's short board but emphasizing the rate-limiting step in a dynamic process.
