Job Characteristics Model, JCM
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Proposed by Hackman and Oldham. It posits that five core characteristics determine the motivating potential of a job: skill variety, task identity (completing a whole piece of work from start to finish), task significance (impact on others), autonomy, and feedback.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Job design: If employees find work boring, don't just think about raising pay. Try increasing 'task identity' (let them be responsible for the whole process rather than being a cog) or 'task significance' (let them meet the customers who benefit).
Anchor fast decisions
Hackman and Oldham proposed five core characteristics (skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, feedback) that influence intrinsic motivation and performance through 'critical psychological states'; autonomy and feedback have a particularly strong impact on satisfaction.
