Toyotism is an alternative to Fordism's "mass production, push inventory": it uses "pull" (kanban/JIT) to produce on demand, treats inventory as waste, uses autonomation to make abnormalities visible, and continuously reduces waste through continuous improvement (Kaizen). The mechanism is to replace "accumulation" with "flow" and "hiding problems" with "exposing problems", thereby achieving higher responsiveness and quality with fewer resources.
