Population Bottleneck Effect
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-28
CORE DEFINITION
A population bottleneck markedly reduces population size for at least one generation. Genetic drift in the smaller population can alter allele frequencies and reduce variation. There is no universal “more than 50% decline” threshold, nor must a recovering population have an extremely uniform gene pool. This entry concerns genetics, distinct from a production-throughput bottleneck.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Distinguish recovery in headcount from retention of genetic variation when analyzing conservation and population recovery. Genetics does not directly establish how layoffs determine organizational culture or staffing decisions.
Anchor fast decisions
A sharp reduction narrows the genetic sample passed to later generations. Random sampling can remove alleles or change their frequencies; drift is stronger in small populations, and later population growth does not automatically restore lost variants. This is not the mechanism of a slow workstation limiting throughput.
