Zero-Based Thinking
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Zero-based thinking is a heuristic question for reassessing existing decisions: If I were not already doing this, knowing what I know now, would I start? Brian Tracy uses it to challenge activities people continue but would not choose again. It is distinct from first-principles reasoning that derives conclusions from basic facts.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Separate “I have already invested a lot” from “Is continuing worthwhile from now on?” to identify commitments for reassessment, then compare the future consequences of continuing, changing, or exiting.
Anchor fast decisions
Reframing an existing commitment as a new choice can expose persistence based only on inertia or past investment. This reflective tool does not automatically yield the optimal answer: exit costs, obligations, and capabilities already developed still affect future choices.
