CORE DEFINITION

In contrast to FOMO, the fear of missing out, JOMO describes satisfaction in deliberately skipping some activities or continuous information checking and attending to an experience one has chosen. It is a term for an attitude and experience, not a rejection of social contact.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

Check whether a decision to participate serves a personal need or merely avoids feeling left behind. The concept permits selective nonparticipation or less information consumption; adopting the JOMO label does not establish improved mental health or focus.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

The concept reframes missing an activity as making time for a chosen experience, emphasizing satisfaction in voluntary choice. Less comparison and fewer notifications may help some people engage with the present, but this is a practical interpretation, not a single established mechanism guaranteeing better mental health.
