Propositional Logic

CORE DEFINITION
Propositional logic studies how the meanings of sentences, and the inferential relations among them, arise from the contribution that a class of logical operators called propositional connectives makes to determining the truth or assertability conditions of sentences. Connectives are truth-functional, so the truth value of a compound depends only on the truth values of its components.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Take apart structure: reduce a long sentence to a combination of connectives and expose the skeleton of the inference. - Compute truth values: work out the value of a compound layer by layer from the truth functions of the connectives. - Self-check consistency: enumerate truth-value combinations and test whether a set of assertions conflicts with itself.
Anchor fast decisions
Propositional connectives are truth functions: the truth values of conjunction, disjunction, and negation depend only on the values of the constituent sentences, so the value of a formula can be computed recursively and validity can in principle be decided by enumeration. Because that computation grows exponentially with the number of atoms, satisfiability is NP-complete, while compactness guarantees that if every finite subset is satisfiable so is the whole set.
