Fuzzy Logic

CORE DEFINITION
Fuzzy logic aims to capture reasoning with vague or imprecise statements, such as Peter is young, wealthy, tall, or hungry. It belongs to the family of many-valued logics, in which truth values are interpreted as degrees of truth, and the truth value of a compound is determined by the truth values of its components, so truth-functionality is retained as in classical logic.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Represent degrees: use a truth value between zero and one to capture vague predicates such as young or tall. - Handle boundaries: use gradual truth to dissolve the sharp cut between heap and non-heap in sorites reasoning. - Design operations: choose conjunction and implication rules so that compound judgments can be computed.
Anchor fast decisions
Fuzzy logic replaces the two poles of true and false with real numbers in the interval from zero to one, reading truth as a degree. Conjunction is usually computed by a t-norm such as minimum or product, and implication by its residuum; once these operations are fixed, the value of a compound is uniquely determined by the values of its parts, so vagueness is accommodated while truth-functionality is preserved.
