Clear the Inbox

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Proposed by Merlin Mann, inbox zero means keeping the inbox or backlog empty at all times. The point is not to reply to every email but to triage each message instantly: delete, delegate, archive, or execute if it takes under two minutes. The inbox must never serve as a to-do list, because every message sitting in it silently consumes part of your attention.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Free mental memory: move tasks out of the inbox into a dedicated system. - Triage on touch: decide the next action for each message the moment you see it. - Batch the sessions: process at fixed times rather than reacting all day.
Anchor fast decisions
An open loop in the inbox occupies working memory even when you are not looking at it, which creates a steady cognitive drag. Immediate classification closes each loop and moves the commitment into a trusted external system, so the mind stops re-notifying itself about the same messages.
