Security Situational Awareness
Updated 2026-09-11
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
The security version of situational awareness runs through three levels: perceiving current state data, understanding what the observed events mean for the organisation, and projecting how the situation is likely to develop. Together they turn monitoring from a passive log into an anticipatory loop. The qualification is that projection depends on the quality of the first two levels, so feeding a model more alerts without analysis improves nothing.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use Three-Level Check: ask separately what is happening, what it means, and what comes next. - Use Priority Filtering: rank alerts by projected impact rather than by volume or recency.
Anchor fast decisions
Raw events carry no meaning on their own, and an operator who skips interpretation reacts to whatever arrived most recently. Understanding converts events into a model of the attacker's position, and projection extends that model forward, which is what allows a response to be prepared before the incident completes.
